Atmospheric Nitrogen ($78\%$) is fixed by Rhizobium bacteria in root nodules of leguminous plants and blue-green algae into nitrates and nitrites. Denitrifying bacteria in soil convert nitrogenous compounds back into gaseous atmospheric nitrogen, maintaining constant atmospheric balance.
